Start with location
Most Jaisalmer desert camps are around Sam Sand Dunes, about 40 km west of the city, or near Kanoi and Khuri. Being close to the dunes means less time in a vehicle at sunset. Ask how far the camp is from the dunes you will actually visit, not just from the city.
Look closely at the tent
“Swiss tent” covers a lot. Ask whether the bed is a proper frame on a raised base, whether the bathroom is attached and built or a canvas cubicle, and whether there is hot water. Ask to see recent guest photos if the images on a site look too perfect.
Match the tent to the season
From November to February a non-AC tent is usually comfortable and the nights are cold, so check for heating or extra blankets. From March to October, air-conditioning is worth paying for, since a canvas tent holds the day’s heat.
Read the package line by line
A quote should state which safaris are included, whether dinner and breakfast are included, whether the cultural programme is included and whether pickup is extra. If two camps differ a lot in price, this is usually where the difference lies.
Decide how much evening you want
Larger camps run a full programme of music, dance and a bonfire, which is fun but can be lively into the night. If you would prefer quiet, ask when the music ends, or consider a private safari away from the main strip.
Get it in writing
Before paying an advance, ask for a written confirmation with your date, tent category, total price and cancellation terms. Any reputable camp will send this without fuss.
Frequently asked questions

Yes, especially for winter weekends and holidays. Send your dates early, as the better tent categories go first.
