A camel moves at walking speed, so you notice the ripples in the sand, the scrub between the dunes and the light changing around you. A camel ride is included with every tent stay at our camp, and you can also book one without staying over.

Short ride or longer trek
Most guests take a short ride timed for sunset, which is usually enough for a first time on a camel and pairs well with an evening at the camp.
If you want to get away from the busy part of the dunes, ask about a longer trek. Our half-day, full-day and overnight non-touristic safaris cover more ground on smaller tracks, with a meal or a night out on the sand.
What riding a camel is actually like
A camel stands up back legs first, so you tip forward and then back. Hold the saddle handle and lean back as it rises; your handler will tell you when. Once it is walking the motion is a slow side-to-side sway.
After an hour or two most people feel it in their legs and lower back. If you have a back, neck or hip problem, or you are pregnant, tell us when you enquire and we will suggest a better option, such as a jeep ride.
Travelling with children
Older children usually love it. Younger ones can often ride with an adult on the same camel. Share ages when you enquire and we will tell you what is practical on the day.
When to go
Late afternoon and early morning are the most comfortable times and have the best light. From October to March you can ride for longer. In the hot months we keep rides close to sunrise and sunset.
What to wear
Long trousers are more comfortable than shorts against the saddle. Bring a scarf or hat for wind and sun, sunglasses and closed shoes, and leave anything you would hate to fill with sand back in your tent.
Treating the animals well
Follow your handler’s instructions, do not feed the camel unless asked, and do not stand directly behind it. If you think a ride should stop, for you or the animal, say so and it will.
