Inside the fort
Walk the lanes early, before the day heats up. Visit the Jain temples and the rampart viewpoints.
The havelis
Patwon Ki Haveli is the best known; Nathmal and Salim Singh havelis are nearby.
Out of the city
Bada Bagh, Kuldhara and Khaba Fort sit on the road to Sam, so they combine well with a safari.
Gadisar Lake
The man-made lake on the edge of the city is at its best at sunrise and sunset, when the carved chhatris catch the light. Boat rides are usually available, and it is an easy first stop.
A route that works
Morning in the fort and havelis while it is cool. After lunch, drive west via Bada Bagh and Kuldhara, with Khaba Fort if you have the time, and reach Sam by late afternoon for the sunset safari. Stay the night at a camp and you need not rush back.
What to keep in mind
Dress modestly and remove your shoes at the Jain temples. Wear good shoes for the fort’s worn stone lanes, and carry water and cash for small entry fees and stalls.
