A Different Kind of Desert Resort in Jaisalmer
Most visitors to Jaisalmer split their time between the walled city and the busy dunes at Sam. Vijaybagh sits in between, in open farmland near Kuldhara Village, where the evenings are quiet and the horizon is wide. It is a resort for travellers who want to see how the desert lives day to day, not only how it looks at sunset.
The buildings borrow from village architecture: low cottages finished in ochre lime plaster, dry-stone walls of local yellow stone, doorways outlined in mirror-work and bamboo shades over the verandahs. Inside, rooms are simple and calm, with hand-loomed rugs, cane lamps and wooden beds. A covered rooftop lounge with woven chairs and charpais looks across the cottages to the scrub beyond, and the dining hall is built in the same rough-cut stone.
From the air the setting is easy to read: the resort, a rainwater pond, ploughed fields and grazing land running out to the horizon. Mornings start with birdsong and cattle bells rather than traffic. Days can be as slow as you like, a walk across the fields, a long lunch of village-style food, an hour on the rooftop, or as full as a horse ride, a camel safari and a visit to the abandoned village of Kuldhara.
Vijaybagh suits families who want space for children, couples who prefer quiet to a cultural show, and groups looking for somewhere they can spread out. If you are comparing it with a tented camp, our desert camp at Sam Sand Dunes is the livelier, dune-side option; Vijaybagh is the rural, slower one.
